This is my second attempt with ArtRage 2.2 and the first serious one, I should say. A fellow blogger asked me for a filed caricature of Wilde and I took the chance to do one with a complete new approach to me. Instead of the usual realistic coloring, I tried the fauviste palette inspired by the great Philip Burke.
It is a great leap for me as I always felt intimidated by contrasting colors since I am daltonic (yet not complete color-blind). So, you can tell if I failed all over or if there is still hope of redemption to me.
A special thanks to my cousin Claudia who gave me this wonderful piece of software as a present for my birthday. She is a true artist and the author of great books for children.

Este es mi segundo intento con ArtRage 2.2 y el primero serio, debería decir. Una bloguer colega me pidió una caricatura archivada de Wilde y tomé la oportunidad para hacer uno con un enfoque completamente nuevo para mí. En lugar del acostumbrado color realista probé con la paleta fauvista inspirado por el gran Philip Burke.
Es un gran salto para mí que siempre estuve intimidado por los colores contrastantes dado que soy daltónico (aunque no del todo). De modo que ustedes pueden decirme si fracasé miserablemente o si todavía tengo una esperanza de redención.
Un agradecimiento especial para mi prima Claudia que me regaló este maravilloso programa para mi cumpleaños. Ella es una verdadera artista y hace grandes libros para chicos.

Some days ago I had an article on Clint Eastwood’s last picture and the power of images. I was so concentrated in Clint’s wrinkles that forgot to control the likeness.
Then I thought it was a good chance to try the capacities of the full version of ArtRage 2.2 I just bought on line (mere U$S 20). This time I indulged exploring different brush settings and layer modes combinations. The outcome wasn’t as good as with the plain oils setting I tried before with the basic free version.

Hace unos días tuve un artículo sobre la última película de Clint Eastwood y el poder de la imagen. Me concentré tanto en las arrugas de Clint que me olvidé de controlar el parecido.
Luego pensé que era una buena oportunidad de probar las capacidades de la versión completa de ArtRage 2.2, que recién compré por Internet (sólo 20 dólares). Esta vez me entretuve explorando las diferentes combinaciones de modos de las capas y pinceles. El resultado no fue tan bueno como cuando probé la versión básica gratis con los óleos digitales.

Most of the times I am requested by telephone to draw these color illos for the weekly suplement of the newspaper before the article is actually wrote, but with just a few night hours to do it. This time the issue was the end of holidays for local politicos and potential candidates for the coming presidential elections.
From left to right they are: President Kirchner and his wife, senator and would be successor Cristina Fernández; Neuquén oil rich province Governor, Sobisch; tycoon and manager of popular soccer team Boca Juniors, Macri; former Economy Minister, Lavagna and center-left Carrió.
The article contends that the only two opposition candidates with chances of a good performance (but few to win) are Lavagna and Carrió.

La mayor parte de las veces se me pide hacer estas ilustraciones a color telefónicamente antes de que el artículo sea escrito, pero con sólo unas cuantas horas nocturnas para hacerlo. Esta vez el tema era el fin de las vacaciones para los políticos y potenciales candidatos en las próximas elecciones presidenciales.
De izquierda a derecha: el presidente Kirchner y su esposa, senadora y posible presidente, Cristina fernández; el gobernador Sobisch, de la provincia petrolera de Neuquén; el millonario y presidente del popular club de fútbol Boca Juniors, Macri; el ex ministro de Economía, Lavagna y la centroizquierdista Carrió.
El artículo sostiene que los únicos candidatos opositores con posibilidades de hacer un buen papel (pero no de ganar) son Lavagna y Carrió.

General Julio Argentino Roca was the dominant character in Argentina’s politics from 1880 until 1930 well after his death. He established the foundations of modern economy and political Argentina. As Minister of War he defeated the aborigins that holded the rich plains. Then, as President, he took off the Buenos Aires city, port and customs from the homonim province and passed it to the Nation. Under his rule the country became the main target of foreing investiment (railroads, public services, agro bussiness) and one of the biggest agro exporters in the world.
This interview with researchers in Political Geography stresses how the victory over the aborigins turned to be the visiting card of the country to be aknowleged by Europeans as a civilized country. So, they say, his government treated the new conquered lands in the same way Europeans treated their African colonies. They also say that that initial status loom until today over the institutions of the provinces later established on those territories.

El General Julio Argentino Roca fue la figura dominante de la política argentina desde 1880 hasta 1930, mucho después de su muerte. Él estableció las bases de la economía y la política argentinas modernas. Como Ministro de Guerra derrotó a los aborígenes que poseían las ricas planicies. Luego, como Presidente, separó la ciudad, el puerto y la aduana de Buenos Aires de la provincia homónima y los entregó a la Nación. Bajó su gobierno el país se convirtió en el principal receptor de inversiones extranjeras (ferrocarriles, servicios públicos, negocios agrarios) y uno de los principales agroexportadores mundiales.
Esta entrevista con investigadores en Geografía Política destaca cómo la victoria sobre los aborígenes se transformó en la tarjeta de presentación del país para ser aceptado por los europeos como un país civilizado. Por eso, dicen, su gobierno trató a los nuevos territorios conquistados del mismo modo que los europeos trataban a sus colonias africanas. También dicen que esta condición inicial pesa hasta nuestros días sobre las instituciones de las provincias que luego se establecerían sobre esos territorios.
