This article recalls the personality of the late adventure comics Argentinean writer -here depicted in his most famous character (”el Eternauta”) costumes. A geologist and children stories writer, he turned to comics as a means of to externalize his moral and political inner convictions. These changed from social integration and modernization in the 50s to the Montoneros guerrilla warfare in the 70s. He ended kidnapped (”desaparecido”) and killed by the latest military Junta, together with his four daughters, their husbands and children (two of them recovered lately).
I was a young reader of his more philosophical comics (”Ernie Pike”, “Mort Cinder”) but didn’t went attracted by his more famous and political one. I find his journey and his horrible fate a symptom of the peculiar Argentine political paradoxes. As the middle class felt his social status jeopardized by the closure of the democratic ways of industrial development promoted by the Nixon’s era intervention, its most humanistic members turned to belief in some sort of popular (not communist) “revolution”.

Este artículo recuerda la personalidad del fallecido escritor argentino de historietas de aventuras, aquí caracterizado como su más famoso personaje (”el Eternauta”). Geólogo y escritor de cuentos infantiles, se volcó a la historieta como medio de expresión de sus convicciones morales y políticas. Éstas cambiaron desde la modernización y la integración social en los ‘50 a la guerrilla de los Montoneros en los ‘70. Terminó secuestrado (”desaparecido”) y muerto por la última Junta militar, junto a sus cuatro hijas, sus maridos y cuatro hijos (dos de los cuales luego recuperados).
Yo fui un joven lector de sus historietas más filosóficas (”Ernie Pike”, “Mort Cinder”) pero no me sentí atraído por la más famosa y política de ellas. Encuentro en su trayectoria y horrible destino un síntoma de las peculiares paradojas políticas argentinas. En tanto la clase media sintió amenazada su posición por la clausura de las vías democráticas de industrialización -promovidas por la intervención de la era Nixon- sus miembros más humanistas llegaron a creer en una suerte de “revolución” popular (no comunista).

Giuliano Amato, Italy’s Minister of the Interior and an educated man- shows a similar fear of the new immigrants from Rumania -mainly Gypsies.

En este artículo el Dr. Ciapuscio compara dos sabores de la xenofobia. Buchanan tiene un rudo estilo para enfrentar la expansión de la minoría hispánica y la lengua castellana en los EE.UU. Giuliano Amato, Ministro del Interior de Italia y un hombre educado, muestra un miedo similar por los nuevos inmigrantes de Rumania, principalmente gitanos.

This article by Dr. Ciapuscio confronts recent declarations by Pope Benedictus XVI with the seminal book by ecologist Lynn White jr. (”Medieval technology and social change”). White charged Christianism with contempt for Nature while Ratzinger (as well as nobelized Al Gore) says no so. But both coincide on St. Francis as their positive model to follow after.

White acusó al cristianismo po despreciar a la naturaleza mientras ratzinger (así como el nobelizado Al Gore) dicen que no tanto. Pero ambos coinciden en San Francisco como el modelo positivo a seguir.

In this interview this Argentinean journalist tells the story of an isolated Peruvian peasant (Segundo Villanueva) who opted for the Old Testament against the Second one, founded a community and settled in Jerusalem. Being herself a half-Jewish raised a Catholic she noticed a small information on the Net and went after the story. A classical tale of good investigative journalism.
Perhaps a more Jewish formed journalist wouldn’t be so fascinated by this peasant conversion. Judaism was a very proselytizer religion until its Christian branch gained power and became a persecutor.

En esta entrevista la periodista argentina cuenta la historia del aislado campesino peruano (Segundo Villanueva) que prefirió el Antiguo Testamento al Nuevo, fundó una comunidad y se estableció en Jerusalén. Siendo ella misma medio judía educada como católica advirtió una pequeña información en la Red y fue tras la historia. Un clásico relato de buen periodismo de investigación.
Tal vez un periodista con más formación judía no se habría facinado por la conversión de este campesino. El judaísmo fue una religión muy proselitista hasta que su rama cristiana obtuvo poder y se transformó en perseguidora.

In this interview this politics analyst talks about the decadence of the parties system. He points out how the parties went substituted by social movements and co opted by opportunistic “caudillos”. So far so good; but, when searching for the causes, he go back to the “Spanish tradition” or even to the old conservative theory of Alan Bloom. Which I see as a paradox as he doesn’t even mention the deleterious effects of the savage free markets economics of the nineties on a political class devoid of any tools as to improve the status of their constituency.

En esta entrevista este analista político habla de la decadencia del sistema de partidos. Apunta a cómo los partidos fueron desplazados por los movimientos sociales y cooptados por caudillos oportunistas. Todo bien hasta aquí pero, al buscar las causas, viaja hasta la “tradición hispánica” o, incluso, hasta la vieja teoría conservadora de Alan Bloom. Lo que veo como una paradoja ya que ni siquiera menciona los efectos deletéreos que tuvieron las políticas económicas salvajes de libre mercado sobre una clase política privada de toda herramienta para mejorar las condiciones de sus votantes.
