Ballester is a former Colonel who was dismissed from the Army after uprising to demand democratic elections. In this interview he recall his efforts to establish a center for democratic military (Cemida). He complains that the civil rulers didn’t give him attention (so to not offend active Army men) and that the Army educative institutes didn’t change at its core. On the other hand, the Cemida men has been hired by international agencies to serve as experts in trials for Human Rights violations by military men.

Ballester es un ex coronel destituído del Ejército después de levantarse reclamando elecciones democráticas. En esta entrevista recuerda sus esfuerzos para establecer un Centro de Militares por la Democracia (Cemida). Se queja de que los gobernantes civiles no le prestaron atención (para no ofender a los militares en actividad) y de que los institutos educativos militares no han cambiado en su esencia. Por otro lado, los hombres del Cemida han sido contratados por agencias internacionales para servir como expertos en juicios por violaciones de Derechos Humanos por parte de militares.

This is my take on the dangerous Pakistan crisis. After many years enjoying the power backed by USA, Musharraf reelection is jeopardized by an opposition also backed by USA and an increasing religious violence. All this in a nuclear country never considered “dangerous” until now.
This was a b & w drawing but I was requested to colorize it at the last minute. I think it was too late for the editing desk, as you can see.

Tras varios años de gozar del poder con el respaldo de EE.UU., la relección de Musharraf se ve amenazada por una oposición también respaldada por EE.UU. y por la creciente violencia religiosa. Todo esto en un país con armas atómicas que no había sido considerado “peligroso” hasta ahora.
Este era un dibujo en blanco y negro pero a última hora se me pidió colorearlo. Pienso que fue muy tarde para la mesa de edición, según lo que se ve.

A very interesting interview with the former president of Brazil (Spanish). Both for his assertions (in short: “sometimes you have to take the only choices left to you by the reality”) as for the spectacle of a young sociologist with a strong anti-imperialist stand turned into a mature conservative politician. Perhaps it’s in human nature. Very sad.

Muy interesante entrevista con el ex presidente de Brasil. Tanto por sus afirmaciones (en resumen: “a veces tenés que tomar la única opción que te deja la realidad”) como por el espectáculo de ver a un joven sociólogo de fuertes posiciones antiimperialistas vuelto un maduro político conservador. Tal vez sea la naturaleza humana. Muy triste.

A quick sketch from the news. In an unusual sight for a summit King Juan Carlos of Spain shouted to Chávez as if he where a mischievous kid pestering Rodríguez Zapatero. But there was something more than the regular Chávez show to deliver attention onto himself. Chávez was recalling Zapatero’s predecessor Aznar support to a failed coup against Chávez and the past (and present?) destructive behavior of Spanish investors in Latin America.

Un boceto rápido de las noticias. En un hecho inusual para una cumbre el rey Juan Carlos de España le gritó a Chávez como si éste fuera un chico travieso que importunaba a Rodríguez Zapatero. Pero ahí pasaba algo más que el usual show de Chávez para obtener atención. Chávez le estaba recordando el apoyo de Aznar -predecesor de Zapatero- al fallido golpe en su contra y la pasada (¿y presente?) conducta destructiva de los inversores españoles en Latinoamérica.

Oppenheimer critics the common place so recurred to these days about Cristina Fernández de Kirchner as being “the Argentinean Hillary”. He acknowledges similarities between the two “progressives”, experienced politician women, but he stresses differences too, as Cristina was chosen as a candidate by her husband still in power, without any primary vote by their Party’s rank and file. Despite Cristina’s openness to talk with business people and interest in international affairs is wider than that of her husband, Oppenheimer remains skeptic about a real change of course that, he thinks, “loses the opportunity” to modernization and to attract foreign investments.
Not that I don’t have preventions about the future Cristina’s government, but for completely different reasons. As the great historian Tulio Halperin Donghi warned us some time ago: the Kirchner’s enemies are their best rescuers.

Oppenheimer critica el lugar común tan recurrido en estos días sobre Cristina Fernández de Kirchner como “la Hillary argentina”. Reconoce similitudes entre las dos como mujeres políticas “progresistas” con experiencia, pero también destaca las diferencias dado que Cristina fue elegida a dedo como candidata por su marido en el poder, sin pasar por una elección partidaria interna de sus bases. Pese a que la apertura de Cristina para hablar con los empresarios y su interés por los asuntos internacionales es mayor que la de su marido, Oppenheimer se mantiene escéptico sobre un cambio real del curso que, piensa él, está “perdiendo la oportunidad” de modernizarse y atraer inversiones extranjeras.
No es que yo no tenga prevenciones sobre el futuro gobierno de Cristina, pero por razones totalmente diferentes. Como el gran historiador Tulio Halperín Donghi nos advirtió hace un tiempo: los enemigos de los Kirchner son los que mejor los rescatan.

This week my assignment for the Debates supplement was changed twice. In the end it was Stone’s portrait in connection to his new movie on the My Lai massacre back in the Vietnm war. Just in time with the Blackwater’s uncovered activities in Iraq.

Esta semana mi tarea para el suplemento Debates fue cambiada dos veces. Al final fue el retrato de Stone vinculado a su nueva película sobre la masacre de My Lai allá por la guerra de Vietnam. Just a tiempo para las descubiertas actividades de Blackwarer en Irak.

This article by Gabriel Rafart asks for the leftist core of a “populist” movement such as Peronism. He concludes that Peronism is a part of the leftist political universe by its plebeian constituency and with Cristina it will gain, perhaps, more “respectable”, European Social-democrat traits.
I think that all this may be truth but in the sense that the European Social Democracy ceased to be “leftist” to turn itself into a discreet companion of Big Business.
The illo was requested without to know the article, so it depicts just the recent elections results. In the backgrounds there are Neuquen’s Sobisch sunk while Carrió still rows as the main Opposition leader.

Este artículo de Gabriel Rafart se interroga por el contenido izquierdista de un movimiento “populista” como el Peronismo. Concluye que el Peronismo forma parte del universo político de Izquierda por su base plebeya y que con Cristina ganará, tal vez, rasgos más respetables, al estilo de la Socialdemocracia europea.
Pienso que todo esto puede ser cierto, pero en el sentido de que la Socialdemocracia europea ha dejado de ser “izquierdista” para convertirse en un compañero circunspecto de las grandes corporaciones.
La ilustración fue encargada sin conocer el artículo; por lo tanto sólo describe el resultado de las elecciones. En el fondo están Sobisch, de Neuquén, hundiéndose mientras Carrió todavía rema como principal líder de la oposición.
