The 91 years old English historian is revered by many as a living legend. Interviewed via e-mail, Hobsbawm see the task of the historian as “to help the people to shape his opinion, not to give it formed”. He stresses the value of skepticism towards voluntarism or ideological enthusiasm when reflecting upon the present time, as the Fukuyama (the “End of History”) case showed. He hopes (but without certitude) that the hysteria about the terror phenomenon will yield to a reflection which includes the terror previously imposed by imperialist powers. The discourse on terror (the good vs. the evil) is as dangerous as the terror itself.

A los 91 años, el historiador inglés es reverenciado como una leyenda viviente por muchos. Entrevistado por e-mail, Hobsmawm considera el rol del historiador “ayudar a que la gente se forme opinión, no formársela”. Remarca el valor del escepticismo hacia el voluntarismo o el entusiasmo ideológico cuando se reflexiona sobre el Presente, como mostró el caso de Fukuyama (el “Fin de la Historia”). Espera (pero sin certidumbre) que la histeria acerca del fenómeno terrorista cederá el paso a una reflexión que incluya el terror impuesto previamente por las potencias imperialistas. El discurso sobre el terror (el bien vs. el mal) es tan peligroso como el propio terror.

Interviewed after his participation at the Second Congress of FOPEA (Foro de Periodismo Argentino-Argentinian Journalism Forum), Charles Lewis told his journey after quitting a successful career as a producer for the famous “60 minutes” show. Tired of imposed restrictions on his investigative proposals he stepped out to found the Center for Public Integrity an then The Fund for Independence in Journalism -a worldwide net of investigative journalists. Lewis is a strong critic of the extended trend in the media to save money by shrinking their staff and avoiding long-term insight projects. He judges the post-9/11 soft attitude towards the American Administration propaganda as the lowest point of the American journalism.
I regard Lewis’ thought and activities of the highest value yet I keep a hint of skepticism. FOPEA gathers independent journalists as well as some of high compromises with the mainstream Argentine media. Moreover, I doubt that some investigations funded by the TFIJ are of great relevance to clarify the obscure complex of the Argentinean social and economic warp that compromises its future.

Entrevistado tras su participación en el Segundo Congreso de FOPEA (Foro de Periodismo Argentino), Charles Lewis relató su trayectoria después de abandonar una exitosa carrera como productor del famoso programa “60 minutos”. Cansado de las restricciones impuestas a sus propuestas de investigación, se fue para fundar el Centro para la Integridad Pública y, luego, la Fundación para la Independencia en Periodismo, una red mundial de periodistas de investigación. Lewis es un fuerte crítico de la tendencia en los medios a ahorrar dinero encogiendo su personal y evitando proyectos penetrantes de largo alcance. Él juzga la actitud blanda del periodismo norteamericano hacia el gobierno después del 9/11 como su más bajo punto histórico.
Yo considero al pensamiento y las actividades de Lewis como del mayor valor, pero conservo un poco de escepticismo. FOPEA aglutina a perodistas independientes junto a algunos muy comprometidos con los medios argentinos dominantes. Además dudo de que algunas investigaciones becadas por la Fundación sean de gran relevancia para clarificar el oscuro complejo de la urdimbre económica y social de la Argentina que compromete su futuro.

Besides, he says, this proves the growing influence of the Hispanic citizenry even in those states with a predominantly anglo-saxon population.

Cesar Libenson is a MD and researcher and a Patagonian native. He synthesized insulin when foreign providers halted its flow. In this long interview he explains his epistemological thought as published in a new book. According to Libenson, the concept of “system” includes not only its internal but its external and the boundaries also. The same as in the Quantum Theory, the observational subject is a part of the system. The interaction between structures brings to complexity and, thus, to time. So, the more complex a structure, the more time bear incorporated. That’s why a complex structure like our mind looks back to simpler (physical) ones and contains a lot of possibilities to trascend.

César Líbenson es un médico e investigador nativo de la Patagonia. Sintetizó insulina cuando los proveedores extranjeros suspendieron la provisión. En esta larga entrevista explica su pensamiento epistemológico publicado en un nuevo libro. Según Libenson, el concepto de “sistema” incluye no sólo su interior, sino su exterior así como sus límites. Como en la Teoría Cuántica, el sujeto observador es parte del sistema. La interacción entre estructuras lleva a la complejidad y, por lo tanto, al tiempo. Así que, cuanto más compleja una estructura, más tiempo tiene incorporado. Por eso es que una estructura compleja, como nuestra mente, observa a las más simples (físicas) como parte del pasado y contiene una cantidad de posibilidades de trascendencia.
