 Argentina’s VP has turned to be the new "Great White Hope" of the opposition economic interest groups and press forces since he casted the decisive vote against his own government’s export fees project in the Senate. A greyish figure unexpectedly rocketeed to the front, he hosted notorious opposition leaders acting as provisional president while Cristina Fernández travelled to speak at the ONU General Asssembly. One of his visitors was Andrés Oppenheimer (En) who pretends to become impressed by the "pragmatist" Cobo’s approach instead of the Kirchner’s "populist" rethoric. The true is that the Kirtchners showed a lot of "pragmatism" regarding the coming financial turmoil and that the friends of the deregulated markets can’t conform a viable alternative. Hot air, for sure, is not one.

El vicepresidente de la Argentina se ha convertido en la nueva "Gran Esperanza Blanca" de las fuerzas opositoras de los grupos de intereses económicos y la prensa desde que puso el voto decisivo contra el proyecto de retenciones a las exportaciones de su propio gobierno en el Senado. Una figura gris inesperadamente impulsada al frente, hospedó a notorias figuras opositoras actuando como presidente provisional mientras Cristina Fernández viajaba para hablar en la Asamblea General de la ONU. Uno de sus visitantes fue Andrés Oppenheimer quien simula sentirse impresionado por el estilo "pragmático" de Cobos en lugar de la retórica "populista" de los Kirchner. La verdad es que los Kirchner mostraron mucho "pragmatismo" frente a la crisis financiera que se avecina y que los amigos de los mercados desregulados no consiguen conformar una alternativa viable. El aire caliente, por cierto, no lo es.

As the turmoil strained the political stability in Bolivia, the Unasur group of South-american presidents gathered in Santiago, Chile to issue a strong statement in behalf of peace and backing Evo Morales’ authority. This article ponders the iniciative as a full success. Not only set a limit to the local powers claims but established a survey comission to guarantee the democratic procedures while avoided any try of foreign intervention as searched by Chávez. Moreover, the gathering showed and increase of Brazil leadership in the region while American one faded fast into the shadows.

Como los disturbios tensionaron la estabilidad política en Bolivia, el grupo de presidentes sudamericanos, Unasur, se reunió en Santiago de Chile para emitir una fuerte declaración a favor de la paz y respaldando la autoridad de Evo Morales. Este artículo estima que la iniciativa fue un éxito completo. No sólo puso un límite a los reclamos de los poderes locales sino que estableció una comisión de seguimiento para garantizar los procedimientos democráticos mientras que eludió todo intento de intervención extranjera, según lo buscaba Chávez. Por otra parte, la reunión mostró un incremento del liderazgo brasileño en la región mientras que el de EE.UU. se decoloró rápidamente.

In short, Oppenheimer warns (En) of both candidates to the American vice-presidency as being more aislacionists and hostile to latino immmigrants than their front runner in their tickets.

 I’m not able to confirm his argument, but I found very amusante that Oppenheimer "anglo" readers think of him as a "leftie" ungrateful to the USA and ask him to go back to Argentina. Here he is mostly viewed as a rightwing pro-USA uprooted from his origins. Funny.

Brevemente. Oppenheimer advierte que ambos candidatos a la vicepresidencia son más aislacionistas y hostiles hacia la inmigración latinoamericana que sus compañeros de fórmula al primer puesto.

 No estoy en condiciones de confirmar su afirmación, pero encontré muy entretenido ver que sus lectores "anglos" de su columna en inglés lo consideran un "zurdo" desagradecido hacia los EE.UU. y lo mandan de vuelta a la Argentina. Aquí la mayoría lo ve como un derechista pro-EE.UU. desarraigado de sus orígenes. Divertido ¿no?

 In this interview, the head of the Libres de Sur (Free of the South) social organization makes the balance after the uprising of the rural owners against the export fees. He points out mistakes on the government side and says that the president must regain momentum by means of deeper social policies. He also warns against a political strategy based on the Justicialist party and its rightists allies which defected at the Senate vote. The main danger -he says- is not (Buenos Aires mayor) Macri but (the former president) Duhalde.

En esta entrevista, el líder de la organización social Libres del Sur hace el balance luego del levantamiento de los propietarios rurales contra los derechos de exportación. Señala errores de parte del gobierno y dice que la presidenta debe retomar la iniciativa profundizando las políticas sociales. También advierte contra una estrategia basada en el Partido Justicialista y sus aliados de derecha que defeccionarion al votar en el Senado. El peligro principal -dice- no es (el gobernador de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires) Macri sino (el ex-presidente) Duhalde.

The famous Brazilian theologian visited the Patagonia region. He encountered Mapuche indians, atogestionary workers and watched the trial of former military regime torturers. In this interview he explains why now he talks of "Liberation Eco-theology" as the Earth is as exploited as the poors. He dismiss the closed medieval fashioned Catholicism of Pope Ratzinger and favors an open attitude towards other spiritual options. He supports those Latin American leaders in search of proggresive changes (even critically) and not to throw them into the arms of the rich.

El famoso teólogo brasileño visitó la región patagónica. Se encontró  con indios Mapuche, trabajadores autogestionarios y asistió al juicio a ex torturadores del régimen militar. En esta entrevista explica por qué ahora habla de "Eco-teología de la Liberación" dado que la Tierra está siendo tan explotada como los pobres. Desprecia el catolicismo cerrado de estilo medieval del Papa Ratzinger y favorece una actitud abierta hacia otras opciones espirituales. Apoya a los líderes latinoamericanos que buscan cambios progresivos (aun críticamente) y no arrojarlos en los brazos de los ricos.
