Mercedes Sosa-Lula
Mercedes Sosa, the great Argentinian singer, has been honored (sp) by the Brazilian Government with its maximum award: the Great Cross to the Cultural Merit. She’s been singing for more than 50 years and her repertory evolved to collect songs from every American country (many from Brazil itself) and from the younger, rocker generation. Her artistic stature was recognized even by those who opposes her openly leftists views. Unexpectedly, some years ago, she backed a rightist politician (seemingly to help her son) but, although disappointed, her fanatics never cut the ties and her popularity didn’t dwindled. I’ve been privileged to be at her first show after the last military dictatorship lifted the ban imposed on her. As President Lula said at the ceremony last week, she makes you feel at home.
La gran cantante argentina Mercedes Sosa fue honrada por el presidente de Brasil con su máximo galardón: La Gran Cruz al Mérito Cultural. Ella ha venido cantando por más de 50 años y su repertorio ha evolucionado para incluir canciones de todos los países americnos (muchos del propio Brasil) y de la generación rockera más joven. Su estatura artística ha sido reconocida incluso por los que se oponen a sus opiniones abiertamente izquierdistas. Sorpresivamente, hace unos años, apoyó a un político derechista (aparentemente para ayudar a su hijo) pero, aunque defraudados, sus fanáticos no cortaron los lazos y su popularidad no decayó. Yo tuve el privilegio de asistir a su primera presentación tras el levantamiento de la prohibición que la última dictadura militar le había impuesto. Como dijo el presidente Lula en la ceremonia de la semana pasada, ella lo hace a uno sentirse en casa.
