I had to illustrate an article (sp) by Sami Nair, about the quarrels between internal factions of the French Socialist Party and how  Sarkozy profits from it. I know the Star Wars metaphor isn’t accurate, as one of the "jedis" has to become Darth Vader later, but ,hey!, I don’t earn millions for being so accurate after all. The author warns of a grim future if those factions don’t stop fighting, as their party will become just a local or municipal force but never again to win the Presidency. He claims that it must become a wide house to shelter all the social-democratic forces (from marxists to ecologists) with a common national program but enabling to retain the particular identity of each one.

 Tuve que ilustrar un artículo de Sami Nair sobre las luchas entre facciones dentro del Partido socialista francés y cómo Sarkozy se beneficia de esto. Ya sé que la metáfora de la Guerra de las Galaxias no es ajustada, dado que uno de los "jedis" es el que se va a convertir en Dart Vader; pero, bueno, no me pagan millones como para ser tan preciso, después de todo. El autor advierte un triste futuro si esas facciones no dejan de pelear, ya que su partido se va a convertir en una fuerza sólo local o municipal, pero sin volver a ganar nunca la Presidencia. Sostiene que debe convertirse en una casa amplia que refugie a todas las fuerzas social-democráticas (desde marxistas hasta ecologistas) con un programa nacional en común, pero permitiendo retener la identidad particular de cada una.

Oppenheimer ponders if "Fifty years after Fidel Castro took power in Cuba, the big question about the Cuban revolution is not whether it was justified, but whether it was worth it. From all available evidence, it wasn’t". After recalling a bunch of statistics and polls about what the Cubans think of their way of life he asks (in the larger Spanish version) "Was the effort to improve some social index at the cost of lowering the general standard of life worth it?" and he answers no, as other countries like Chile and Costa Rica did the same with less social trauma.

Of course, statistics are debatable (no to speak of Chile’s social trauma under Pinochet’s dictatorship), but the question he dosen’t asks is if Cuba had another way open by its powerful hostile neighbor.

Oppenheimer evalúa si "Cincuenta años después de que Fidel Castro llegara al poder en Cuba, la gran pregunta sobre la revolución cubana no es si fue justificada, sino si valió la pena. Sobre la base de las evidencias disponibles, la respuesta es un claro no." Después de presentar algunas estadísticas y encuestas sobre lo que piensan los cubanos de su modo de vida, se pregunta "Entonces, ¿valió la pena mejorar algunos indicadores sociales al precio de bajar el estándar de vida general de la isla?" y su respuesta es "Definitivamente no. Otros países, como Chile y Costa Rica, han reducido la pobreza a un mínimo y con mucho menos trauma social."

Por supuesto, las estadísticas son debatibles (para no hablar del trauma social de Chile bajo la dictadura de Pinochet), pero la pregunta que no se hace es si Cuba tuvo abierto otro camino por su poderoso vecino hostil.

Last week the Buenos Aires City Legislature honored the journalist Herman Schiller for his brave record under the last military regime. A plaque was discovered at the place were his weekly Nueva Presencia used to be edited, the street get closed and some 300 atendants heard speeches by venerable intelectual rebels like David Viñas and Osvaldo Bayer and various social representatives. There was music too.

Nueva Presencia appeared in 1977 as a weekly Spanish sheet insert with the local last Yiddish-speaking daily Di Presse. Soon it made a difference, questioning the silence of the local Jewish stablishment and the Israeli embassy in regard the numerous claims of kidnapped people ongoing in the Jewish community. Together with the liberal English-speaking daily The Buenos Aires Herald, were the only public voices to tell this for at least two years.

By that time I was walking my first steps as a newspaper caricaturist in Israel and Schiller used to reprint my drawings. By the end of 1979 I was back in Buenos Aires and was hired as a contributor by both N.P. and B.A.H. Of course, no other regular publication wanted to become connected with these two ones through hiring me. For many years each illustration has to be discussed with the editor so to push a step beyond the words but avoiding to be provocative of a bomb planting; which did happen anyway. Sweet memories.

 La semana pasada la Legislatura de Buenos Aires honró al periodista Herman Schiller por su valiente trayectoria bajo la última dictadura militar. Una placa fue descubierta en el lugar donde se editaba el semanario Nueva Presencia que él dirigía, se cerró la calle y unos 300 asistentes escucharon los discursos de intelectuales venerables como David Viñas y Osvaldo Bayer y variados representantes sociales. También hubo música.

Nueva Presencia apareció en 1977 como suplemento semanal en castellano dentro de Di Presse, el último diario local en idioma idish. Pronto marcó la diferencia cuestionando el silencio de la dirigencia judía y de la embajada israelí frente a los numerosos reclamos de desaparición de personas dentro de la comunidad judía. Junto al diario liberal en idioma inglés, The Buenos Aires Herald, fueron las únicas voces públicas en contar esto por al menos dos años.

Por ese entonces yo daba mis primeros pasos como caricaturista periodístico en Israel y Schiller solía republicar mis dibujos. Hacia el fin de 1979 estaba de vuelta en Buenos Aires y empecé a colaborar tanto para N.P. como para B.A.H. Por supuesto, ninguna otra publicación normal quiso resultar conectada con estas dos a través de contratarme también. Por varios años cada ilustración debía ser conversada con el director para empujar un paso más allá de las palabras pero evitando provocar la implantación de alguna bomba; lo que de todos modos ocurrió. Dulces recuerdos.

This article(sp) by Dr. Ciapuscio sums up another one by Physicist Richard Muller in Foreign Policy. In a free advice sort of to Barack Obama, Muller recalls the common sense on five hot technological issues, then what the Science (as if it where just one) says on it and what the coming President’s policy should be.  As Dr. Ciapuscio warns, Obama hardly will follow this piece of free advice, as Dr. Muller is a member of the JASON think tank, associated with the Pentagon, with a clear cut leaning. In this sense his piece is is a gift of the Trojan horse kind.

Este artículo del Dr. Ciapuscio resume otro del físico Richard Muller publicado en Foreign Policy. En una suerte de consejo gratuito para Barack Obama, Muller recuerda el sentido común sobre cinco temas tecnológicos cruciales, luego lo que dice sobre ello la Ciencia (como si hubiera sólo una) y cuál debería ser la política del futuro presidente. Como advierte el Dr. Ciapuscio, difícilmente Obama siga estos consejos ya que el Dr. Muller es un integrante del grupo JASON -asociado al Pentágono- con una clara inclinación. En este sentido, la pieza es un regalo del tipo del Caballo de Troya.
